Why subscribe?

Federal Title IV-E Adoption Assistance (subsidy) was established to support the incorporation of children from the public foster care system into permanent families. Yet, in Ohio, prospective adoptive parents often encounter a confusing, dysfunctional state and county system when they apply for support on behalf of the special needs children to have become fiercely committed to. Even the most confident parent can be intimated by agency claims about adoption assistance that challenge their common sense and best instincts, but are not easily confirmed or refuted.

The purpose of this experimental venture is really two-fold:

  • To help adopting parents become more effective advocates for their children by combining federal and state policy with practical guidance on traveling the bumpy road to adoption assistance payments in Ohio.

  • To provide a place where prospective adoptive parents and adoptive families can share information, experiences, wisdom and frustration with me and with one another. Hopefully these exchanges will give adoptive parents a stronger collective voice that is long overdue.

As I mentioned, this is an experiment to see if we can create a statewide community of better informed, better organized prospective adoptive parents and adoptive families. Until we see if it works, all subscriptions are free. If it seems successful, I may ask for a modest subscription fee.

As always, I will be available at no charge to field policy, practical ofr research questions. Contact me via e-mail at ohanlont58@gmail.com or tpohanlon@gmail.com or phone at 614-299-0177 (landline) or 614-537-2840 (cell). Note the new e-mail address reserved for adoption assistance.
